Agricultural sheds and farm buildings

Hay and straw sheds, machinery stores, grain stores, cattle housing and lambing sheds, designed, fabricated and erected by farm building contractors. Tell us the span, length and use, and we'll find who can build it.

What we can help you get built

  • Hay and straw sheds, open-fronted or with side sheeting and Yorkshire boarding
  • Machinery and implement stores with roller shutter or sliding doors
  • Cattle housing with feed barriers, ventilated space boarding and slatted or bedded floors
  • Sheep and lambing sheds with natural ventilation and pen layouts
  • Grain stores with retaining walls and concrete floors
  • Lean-to extensions to existing buildings

The numbers a contractor will ask for

Span (the clear width between columns), length and bay spacing (bays are often 4.8 m to 6 m), eaves height (machinery stores often need 5 m or more to clear a telehandler), roof pitch, cladding (box profile steel, fibre cement or Yorkshire boarding), concrete panels or blockwork for the lower walls, and the doors. If you know roughly what you want, put it in the notes on the quote form.

Steel frames designed to standard

Agricultural steel portal frames should be designed by a structural engineer to BS 5502 (buildings and structures for agriculture) and fabricated to the relevant UK CA or CE marking for structural steelwork. Ask each contractor for frame calculations and who erects the building.

Planning for farm buildings works differently from garden buildings. Larger holdings often use a prior notification rather than a full application. Read our agricultural planning guide.

Questions

How much does an agricultural shed cost?

It depends on span, length, eaves height, cladding, concrete work and how far the site is from the fabricator. Steel prices move, so get current quotes. Groundworks and concrete floors often add a large share of the total, so ask each contractor what is included.

How long from order to erection?

Design and fabrication usually take several weeks. Erection of a typical frame and cladding can take one to three weeks once the foundations are ready.

Do you cover the whole UK?

Yes. We look for contractors who cover your postcode in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
