Workshops and timber garages

For woodwork, car restoration, a trade business or just more space than a shed gives you. We'll pass your job to builders who make heavy-duty timber buildings with the floors and doors to match.

Built for weight and work

Workshops and garages need a stronger floor than a shed, often a concrete slab rather than timber, wide double doors or an up-and-over door, and enough headroom to work comfortably. Many people add insulation, a ceiling and power so the space can be used all year.

Things to decide early

  • Will a car or machinery go inside? That decides the floor and the door width.
  • Do you need three-phase or just a single 32 A supply?
  • Single skin or insulated? Insulation stops tools rusting and condensation dripping.
  • Pent or apex roof? Apex gives storage in the roof space.

What affects the price

Size, wall thickness (framing and cladding), the concrete base, doors, windows and electrics. Larger workshops near boundaries may need planning permission because of height, so check our planning guide.

Questions

Steel or timber for a workshop?

Timber is quieter, easier to insulate and looks at home in a garden. Steel is cheaper per square metre at larger sizes and needs less maintenance. For anything bigger than a double garage, see steel frame buildings.

Can I run a business from a garden workshop?

Light use is usually fine. If it brings regular customers, deliveries or noise, check with your council whether it needs planning permission for a change of use.
